UFC on FX: Alves Vs. Kampmann

Saturday March 2nd on FUEL TV & FX was action packed and a historical moment for the UFC. The Main Event was headlined with Thiago “Pitbull” Alves Vs. Matin “The Hitman” Kampmann. Also, Dana White & the Fertitta brothers released a new fighting division with the “Fly-Weights” who will be at 125 pounds! Last weekend served as a Tournament for the Fly-Weight division, featuring 4 fighters in a two fight battle with the winners of each set to fight for the Title. These fights/fighters included: Joseph Benavidez Vs. Yasuhiro Urushitani & Demetrious Johnson Vs. Ian McCall

Main Event: Thiago Alves, who is a top ten Welter-Weight (170 pounds) Looked very good this weekend, his striking and footwork looked improved since his last fight. Martin Kampann, another Top Ten fighter seemed a bit hesitant and weary of Alves’s strikes. Although Kampmann is known for his counter striking, he seemed a bit off due to Thiago’s movement and ability to stay off the cage. Thiago bagged the first 2 rounds and was ready to take home the decision. But a take-down by Alves, a slight critical error put himself in a arm-in guillotine by Kampmann and was forced to tap with just :48 left in the fight!

FLY-WEIGHT Tournament: Joseph Benavidez finished strong in just :11 into the 2nd Round by KO/TKO, and would solidify himself to fight for the Title.

Unfortunately the fight between Demetrious Johnson & Ian McCall was ended with an upset, as the Judges scoring cards were tallied up wrong. This caused a foul decision instead of proceeding with a 4th sudden death round that would determine the winner. Watch Commissioner Craig Waller explain the unfortunate accident here: (Skip To 31:00)
