UCLA Fired Head Coach Jim Mora On His Birthday

On Sunday afternoon, UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero announced that Head Football Coach Jim Mora has been relieved of his duties and that Offensive Coordinator Jedd Fisch will take over as Interim Head Coach for the rest of the season

“”Making a coaching change is never easy, but it’s an especially difficult decision when you know that a coach has given his all to our University,” said Guerrero. “Jim helped reestablish our football program, and was instrumental in so many ways in moving the program forward. While his first four seasons at UCLA were very successful, the past two seasons have not met expectations. We thank Jim and his family for his service to our school and his unquestionable commitment to our student-athletes.”

The terms of Mora’s contract will be honored by UCLA Athletics, exclusively using department-generated funds.

My guess as to why UCLA did it, and decided to swallow the large buyout:  They don’t want Florida to get Chip Kelly before they can swing for the great coach.

It’ll cost UCLA over $12 million to buy out Mora. It’ll cost even more to hire Chip Kelly.

While it’s not a huge surprise Mora got fired considering UCLA has struggled all season despite having an elite QB in Josh Rosen. It is kind of stunning that the Bruins would fire Mora on his birthday.
