Vanderbilt and Wisconsin was a heavyweight showdown of ranked teams in the third round. Ryan Evans scored 11 points and grabbed a crucial rebound in the closing seconds, helping Wisconsin hold off Vanderbilt 60-57 Saturday night to advance to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament.
Wisconsin led most of the way, but Vanderbilt battled to take a late lead, only to have Jordan Taylor respond with a three. Then, with less than thirty seconds left, Wisconsin missed a shot while playing with a two point lead, but got the loose ball rebound. A missed front end of a one-and-one still allowed Vanderbilt an opportunity to tie or win, but John Jenkins long range effort missed. Festus Ezeli appeared to have inside position, but was moved out, and Wisconsin got the rebound. Kevin Stallings was not happy about the no call.
A free throw later, and Vanderbilt had a last desperation opportunity with 1.9 seconds remaining. Jared Berggren tipped the inbounds pass up in the air, though, preserving the win for Wisconsin.
